The Mission

Our History

Although our church is set in a modern building, it was originally started over 100 years ago by William Baker, a fore-runner to the well known Bakers of Danbury whose building and funeral directors businesses still occupy a prime site in the village centre.

William Baker was a devout Christian and originally started by preaching in the open air on the green at Eves Corner but then moved to hold services in his house Ivy Lodge (now occupied by Heathcote School).

At that time he owned a field on the Common from which he extracted sand and gravel for his building work and it was on that site that in 1910 he built his first church - the Danbury Common Old Mission Hall. For many years this was occupied by the Evangelical Film Library but the site has now been sold for redevelopment.

The congregation continued to grow and they themselves built a new larger church on its present site in Maldon Road in 1976.

In 1993 this building had to be extended to accomodate continued growth and in June 2005 we completed a further extension to facilitate our vision for developing our ministry to youth and the community. We are about to embark upon another extension to the main hall to accommodate the growing numbers attending our Sunday services.
