The One Year Bible - Pastor's notes
| Genesis | Matthew | Psalms | Proverbs |
1. Genesis
The theme of Genesis is creation, sin and re-creation. The book tells how God created the world as very good, but that it was marred through human sin. Sin flourishes until the world is so wicked that God destroys it in the flood. However, the new world after the flood was also spoiled by human sin. The call of Abraham, through whom all nations would be blessed, gives hope that God’s purpose to restore this world would eventually be realised through Abraham’s descendants.
2. Psalms
The Pslater is a collection of 150 poems that express a wide variety of emotions including: love and adoration of God, sorrow over sin, dependence on God in desperate circumstances, the battle of fear and trust, walking with God even when the way seems dark, thankfulness for God’s care, devotion to the word of God and confidence in the eventual triumph of God’s purposes in this world.
3. Proverbs
The books states its purpose in 1:1-7: its goal is to describe and instill ‘wisdom’ in God’s people. Wisdom starts with a ‘fear of the lord’ but works out in the very practical details of every day life.
4. Matthew
This Gospel provides us with the story of Jesus. The apostle Matthew teaches us that Jesus is the long-anticipated Messiah who brought the kingdom of God to earth and is the propheesied fulfillment of God’s promise of true peace and deliverance for both Jew and Gentile.
